The Seattle Mariners are on fire! After a grueling 15-inning game and a quick turnaround, they're showing no signs of slowing down in the ALCS.
In Game 2, against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Mariners' Julio Rodríguez delivered a massive blow, setting the tone early. With one powerful swing, he sent a 369-foot, three-run homer soaring into the stands, giving the Mariners a commanding lead before they even recorded their first out.
This was a significant moment for several reasons. First, it was the first hit allowed by Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage in the postseason. Yesavage, a rookie, had previously pitched 5 1/3 hitless innings in the AL Division Series.
And this is the part most people miss... This was also the first home run Yesavage has ever given up in the big leagues. The rookie's splitter had been his most effective pitch, with batters only hitting .111 against it during the regular season.
The Mariners' radio broadcast captured the excitement perfectly: "Julio Rodríguez strikes in the top of the first inning with a 3-run blast!"
Rodríguez's home run was set up by a hit-by-pitch and a walk, showcasing the Mariners' ability to capitalize on opportunities. With this performance, Rodríguez now boasts two home runs and six RBIs in the first seven postseason games.
The Mariners now lead the best-of-seven ALCS 2-0 after Monday's victory.
