MSU Study: AI's Lie Detection Accuracy Falls Short of Humans (2025)

They tweaked various factors to see what influenced accuracy: the media format (like full video versus just sound), background context (extra details that set the scene), the balance of lies versus truths in the samples, and even the AI's persona—customized identities that make the AI act and speak more like a real human. 'Our primary aim was to gain insights into AI by treating it as a participant in these deception experiments,' Markowitz notes. 'With the model we tested, AI proved context-aware, but that sensitivity didn't translate to superior lie detection.'

The bottom line? AI's results don't align with human judgment or precision, suggesting that our 'humanness'—those subtle, intuitive elements of social interaction—acts as a key limitation, or boundary, for deception theories. The study underscores that while AI might seem objective, the field needs massive strides before generative AI can reliably handle lie detection.
