Heartbreak in Corvallis: Trent Bray's tenure as Oregon State's head coach has come to an abrupt end. After a dismal start to the season, with the Beavers stumbling to an 0-7 record, the university made the difficult decision to part ways with their coach. This news comes as a shock to many, especially considering Bray's deep roots with the program.
Trent Bray, a former Oregon State linebacker from 2002 to 2005, dedicated over a decade to the Beavers, serving in various coaching roles across two stints. He took the helm as head coach just last year, succeeding Jonathan Smith, who departed for Michigan State. Bray's overall record as head coach stands at 5-14.
The current season has been a stark contrast to the Beavers' performance in 2023, when they finished strong under Smith. The Beavers were 8-4 and placed fourth in the Pac-12. The team's struggles are particularly evident, as they are the only FBS team with seven losses. Last week, Bray made a move to address the team's issues by firing the special teams coordinator.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bray's buyout is approximately $4 million, but it will be paid out in installments over the next two years. The amount could be reduced if Bray secures another coaching position during that time.
Bray's connection to Oregon State runs deep. He was the team's defensive coordinator for two and a half seasons before becoming head coach. He was also a part of the coaching staff for 11 seasons overall.
The Beavers are scheduled to play Lafayette, an FCS team, next Saturday.
And this is the part most people miss... The team's performance this season marks their worst start since 1991.
